The Bush administration is reportedly planning as one of its final actions to announce a “right of conscience” rule that could further limit access to abortion, particularly for poor and rural women, and might even impact a much broader range of medical procedures.

“We should call this the ‘Amish bus-driver rule,’” fumed MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow. “If you’re Amish and your values and your beliefs will not allow you to operate an automobile, then surely that’s your inalienable right — but consequently, you will not be hired to drive a bus.”

The rule would apply to over 500,000 facilities nationwide and would allow all healthcare workers — not just doctors and pharmacists but potentially even janitors — to refuse to participate in any procedure they find morally objectionable.

Maddow turned for comment to Princeton professor and reproductive rights activist Melissa Harris-Lacewell, asking, “Do you see this as a major setback for reproductive rights?”

“Absolutely,” Harris-Lacewell agreed, although she emphasized that “this right to conscience is not just about reproductive rights” because it could potentially affect everyone.

Governor Palin displays the same blind spot to suffering that goes into providing for Westerner’s pampered consumerism. In the same vein, most Americans are not aware that Christopher Columbus never set foot on American soil. He spent most of his time in this hemisphere in the Caribbean participating in the genocide of the Tainos. Likewise, most Americans celebrate Thanksgiving in complete oblivion to the suffering, murder, rape and mutilation that was the hallmark of the Pilgrims “landing” on Plymouth Rock.

It may say something about the state of American television that there is one more black president-elect of the United States than there are black actors with individual lead roles in a network television drama.

But after years of ensemble dramas sprinkled with nonwhite supporting actors, the excitement surrounding the election of Barack Obama could help to open doors for more minorities in leading dramatic roles, executives from television production studios said.

Ben Silverman, the co-chairman of NBC Entertainment who oversees the network’s television studio, said that he and the head of the diversity initiative for NBC Universal, Paula Madison, have been pushing for projects starring minorities.

Mr. Silverman said, “We were going after this regardless, but I don’t think you can deny the power that Barack Obama brings in magnifying this direction in our world.” He added, “We’ve all been colorblind for years, but the results don’t necessarily match up to our intentions.”

Ms. Madison said that NBC’s approach was at least as much about business as about social responsibility. “People are not living in single-race silos anymore,” she said. “We said, ‘Let’s try to develop a world that looks like the world we’re living in.’ ”

No one is safe from satire on The Simpsons. The animated series, which just began its 20th season, has lampooned just about every large company, celebrity and pretty much every aspect of pop culture. Last night’s episode featured a six minute segment that parodied Apple Inc. at the start of the show. In Episode 7 the Simpsons travel to the Springfield Mall to discover that a giant “Mapple” Store has been erected inside. The massive glass cube structure looks like a spitting image of the 5th Avenue Apple Store in New York. Lisa Simpson walks inside and notes that “it’s so sterile!” and the one-liners go from there.

The mock store is loaded with MyPods, MyPhones, a Brainiac Bar and the MyCube, a machine “fueled by dreams and powered by imagination.” The cube glows to confirm that it’s off. Its a very good natured jab at Cupertino and there’s something funny in it for just about everyone. You can watch the complete episode at Fox on Demand (with commercials), it starts at about 02:00.

A mile and a half (two and a half kilometers) underwater, a remote control submersible’s camera has captured an eerie surprise: an alien-like, long-armed, and—strangest of all—”elbowed” Magnapinna squid.

In a brief video from the dive recently obtained by National Geographic News, one of the rarely seen squid loiters above the seafloor in the Gulf of Mexico on November 11, 2007.

The clip—from a Shell oil company ROV (remotely operated vehicle)—arrived after a long, circuitous trip through oil-industry in-boxes and other email accounts.

“Perdido ROV Visitor, What Is It?” the email’s subject line read—Perdido being the name of a Shell-owned drilling site. Located about 200 miles (320 kilometers) off Houston, Texas (Gulf of Mexico map), Perdido is one of the world’s deepest oil and gas developments.

The video clip shows the screen of the ROV’s guidance monitor framed with pulsing inputs of time and positioning data.
