KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Guadeloupe drew 2-2 with Antigua and Barbuda to secure the last semifinals spot in the Caribbean Championship on Monday, while defending champion Haiti missed out despite beating Cuba 1-0.
Michel Jean Boucicaut scored Cuba’s lone goal for the victory at Jarrett Park, but the margin was not enough.
Cuba topped Group B with six points, two points ahead of Haiti and Guadeloupe, but the latter advanced with a superior goal-difference.
Mickael Antoine-Curier scored after just one minute and Gregory Gendrey found the net in the 63rd to give Guadeloupe the result it needed in the second match of the day.
Peter Byers scored both of Antigua and Barbuda’s goals in the 35th and 83rd minutes.
At the end of the preliminary round, Guadeloupe joined early qualifiers Cuba, Jamaica and Grenada in the semifinals starting Thursday. All four teams have also booked their spots in next year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament to be held in the United States.

Armstrong, a seven-time Tour de France winner, is working the publicity machine by announcing his return to cycling’s premier event now. Armstrong’s titles remain clouded by questions.
By Philip Hersh

Lance Armstrong, photographed in the Canary Islands where Astana is training, will ride in the 2009 Tour de France.
You knew all along Lance Armstrong’s public dithering about whether his comeback would include the Tour de France was just a ploy to generate more buzz, right?
So you weren’t surprised at all Monday when the Astana cycling team website’s “latest news” rubric said: “NEWS FLASH: Lance Armstrong announces participation in 2009 Tour de France.”
What point would there have been in Armstrong’s returning to competitive road racing after 3 1/2 years if he had skipped the race that brought him both fame and notoriety?
(The latter is not good, even if the two words have mistakenly become interchangeable to most people. In Armstrong’s case, it refers to doping suspicions that have dogged him since his first of seven consecutive Tour victories in 1999, when he tested positive for a banned corticosteroid but was cleared by a therapeutic use exemption many feel was conveniently backdated.)

PARAMIBO, Suriname – Wensley Christoph scored his fourth goal this year and rallied Suriname to a 1:1 draw with Haiti on Wednesday, the final World Cup qualifier for both teams.

Lionel Saint-Preux gave Haiti the lead in the 30th minute, but Christoph, who also scored against Montserrat in the first round of qualifying and both of Suriname’s goals in a 2:2 draw at Haiti in August, equalized in the 41st.
While Haiti qualified for the 1974 finals, this is the closest Suriname has come to reaching the World Cup since advancing to the final round of qualifying for the 1978 championship.

LONDON (AP) – The NBA is eliminating about 80 jobs in the United States, the first major American sports league to announce layoffs because of the worldwide economic turmoil.
Commissioner David Stern told The Associated Press last month the league would cut staff in anticipation of the downturn. He said on Sunday the figure would be about 9 percent of the American work force, and the league confirmed the number of jobs the next day.
“We made the decision some months ago that the economy was going to be a bit wobbly so we began a belt-tightening,” Stern said in London, where the New Jersey Nets beat the Miami Heat in a preseason game.
The NBA continues to hire in other countries, he said, as it seeks to grow internationally.
Stern emphasized that the league is still hitting its business targets.
“My guess is that by the time we tip off in a week or so, we will be down modestly in season tickets. … We think we’ll be up in revenue, but I just can’t say for sure whether we’ll be up or down in attendance because it’s just so touch-and-go, because sports tickets are very much disposable income,” he said. “So, we’re not going to see a huge impact, but I dare say we will see some impact.”

London: England will play their series in the West Indies after Christmas under the umpire review system after the ICC extended the trial to five Test series yesterday.
The system, which was backed by Duncan Fletcher when he was England coach, allows each team to ask for reviews of decisions, although they may make no more than three unsuccessful requests per innings.
According to The Telegraph, England coach Peter Moores was against the system and refused to be part of the trial for the series against South Africa this summer.
But England players will have to add making the “T” sign to their practice this winter. The batsman in receipt of the umpire’s original decision or the captain of the fielding side must make a “T” with both forearms at shoulder height.
The umpire will then refer his decision to the third umpire, who can use slow-motion replays, but is not allowed to use Hawk-Eye, Hot Spot or snick-detecting technology.
US cycling champ Lance Armstrong has said that his comeback to racing may not include the Tour de France, afterall. Armstrong confirmed that he will be racing in the Giro d’Italia for the first time, after relaunching his career in Australia.
In an interview on an Italian web site, Armstrong said: “There is the possibility that the Giro is the only three-week stage race that I will run. Still today, there are doubts over the Tour de France.”
During his career, the Tour de France was something he focused on exclusively. He won it a record seven times. Tour organisers have not replied to Armstrong’s enquiries about whether or not he could race.
