The Bush administration is doing everything it can to delay compliance with a court’s order that the Pentagon turn over pictures of prisoners abused in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a new court filing.
A three-judge appeals court panel in September ordered the administration to turn over 87 photographs depicting abuses at Abu Ghraib prison and other sites. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the photos in 2005.
On Thursday, the administration requested a review of that decision by all 12 appeals court judges. The ACLU expected the move, a lawyer for the group said previously, but it was nonetheless a frustration for those attempting to uncover the full extent of abuse that accompanied the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“This petition is a transparent attempt to delay accountability for the widespread abuse of prisoners held in U.S. custody abroad by keeping the public in the dark,” Amrit Singh, and ACLU staff attorney, said in a news release Friday . “These photographs demonstrate that the abuse of prisoners held in U.S. custody abroad was not aberrational and not confined to Abu Ghraib, but the result of policies adopted by the highest-ranking officials in the administration. The immediate release of these photos is critical to bringing an end to the Bush administration’s torture policies and for preventing prisoner abuse in the future.”

Our 44th president can change many things in the next four years–his hair isn’t one of them. The high-top fade worked for Kid, and we love Charles Barkley’s shiny chrome dome. We even have a soft spot for James Brown’s process. But sadly, none of these beloved styles can make the cut in the White House.

Video gamers who have recently played the racing game Burnout Paradise may find it offers more than a high-speed driving simulation: advertisements for Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, above, have begun appearing in the game. Players of Burnout Paradise who are connected to the Internet are also connected to an in-game system that allows real-life sponsors to place advertisements on billboards and other surfaces in its digital world. Jeff Brown, vice president of communications at Electronic Arts, which publishes Burnout Paradise, said Mr. Obama’s campaign had purchased ads to run in the Xbox 360 version of the game, which he said is most popular among male players ages 16 to 30.
The EA representative said that the ads would appear in only 10 different states, most of them contested battleground states. Paradise City residents in Ohio, Florida, Iowa, Colorado, Indiana, Montana, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, and Wisconsin are being targeted by the campaign. In the 2004 presidential election, all of those states except Wisconsin went to Republican incumbent George W. Bush. Mr. Brown said Senator John McCain’s campaign had not purchased in-game advertisements, but added, “There’s still three weeks before the election.”

An image that looks to be the results of Sarah Palin’s 1981 SAT test (along with some of her high school grades) is floating around the web. We can’t be sure if it’s real, but it’s real embarrassing if so. 425 verbal? Ouch!.

More than 1.5 million people in the US have pre-ordered Google’s first mobile phone, according to reports.
The device, known as the G1, is made by Taiwanese manufacturer HTC, and will be available on the T-Mobile network. It runs Android, an operating system designed in part by Google that aims to bring the desktop computing experience to mobile devices. The G1 gives one-touch access to popular Google online services, such as its email service, YouTube video-sharing site and Google Maps.
According to news website Pulse2.com, T-Mobile sold out of its initial US allocation of G1 handsets, which were earmarked for existing T-Mobile subscribers, leading the network operator to triple its order with HTC, and meaning that about 1.5 million G1 phones have already been sold through pre-orders. Further handsets have been earmarked for sale through high-street retail stores when the phone hits shops in the US on October 22.
It means that about 1.5 million G1 phones have already been sold through pre-orders, with about another two million devices earmarked for purchase in high-street retail stores.
The G1 features a touchscreen and a slide-out Qwerty keyboard, as well as internet browsing via 3G and Wi-Fi, music downloads, and the ability to buy and install additional software, programs and games on the phone from the Android Market application store.
