La Revolte Des Zombies” ( Zombies’ Revolt”), the seventh studio album by alternative Haitian Roots/Vodou group Boukman Eksperyans, is thought provoking and musically enriching.

Always a band of multiple influences, it’s obvious that on this album Boukman seek to include both literally and musically the new generation in its evolution.

Incorporating rock, jazz, funk, reggae, folk and more recently hip-hop and rap, their lyrics embody Haitian history, political upheavals and social changes. Zombie, the signature song on their new CD successfully combines current musical trends including some rap with musical licks people love and that they’re known for.

Boukman Eksperyans is known as introducing electric guitars and keyboard to traditional haitian roots. Followers of the religion were concerned about combining modern with the sacred but traditionalists realized that it was just the medium that was being changed.

Theodore “Lolo” Beaubrun and his wife Mimerose started Boukman Eksperyans, Haiti’s most well-known and oldest on-going rasin-roots bands; their first album Vodou Adjae was released in the late 80s. They won the Best Song at Carnival “Ke’ M Pa Sote (My Heart Doesn’t Leap/I’m Not Afraid)” and during the coup years in the early 90s their songs were banned from radio, though played on pirate radio and through illicit tape distribution. They spent some years in exile, too.

Not being able to pull more than 300 people at a bal in Philly and Jersey when you haven’t played there in a minute?

Djakout fe anpil fot recently and so far the only thing I can honestly say they get respect for is the fact that they stuck to their guns and didn’t entertain the idea of playing for Rodney Noel.

Which is a decision mainly based on smart than money because I heard from DJ Wakine that Orlando festival has no money cause their checks be bouncing (that was a joke, I have never met the man) I guess that meeting in Haiti didn’t amount to anything since the head honcho in Haiti’s been trying so hard to…. I’ll leave that for another story. Back to my main point since I completely sidetrack there for a minute, I’ve been told that Nu Look is the #1 band in the HMI because, wait….. that’s another story too. Djakout Mizik wat tappen?

While Tabou Combo continues to celebrate it’s 40th anniversary throughout this year, legendary lead singer Roger M. Eugene currently putting the finishing touches on his soon to be released second solo album.
No definite date was given for the release however we were able to gig up the name of the album. The album is entitled “A Jamais” and features songs La Bonne Nouvelle. According to Opa Mizik sources, this album has been in the works for a long time and Shoubou is being very careful about it this time around after his last solo album Shou Badou found more success in the French Antilles than the US and Haiti. Good luck to Shoubou.

While there’s been a lot of rumors circulating on whether or not Saida Prosper, one of the singers of the band Hangout will remain in the band on her on free will or whether the band’s managers will let her go. One thing is certain, she’s not happy with the band right now and she’s not waiting around for the situation to get worst before making a move.

Opa Mizik recently learned from it’s sources that Saida’s trying to put her own solo cd out. She’s so serious about it we were told she’s suppose to be flying to New York next week to work with producer Madman JP on her album and may even be lending her vocals on other projects as well.

This doesn’t necessarily means she’s leaving Hangout just yet, we found out she was in the studio with the band recently and even played with them. The solo project is more like a back up plan if things doesn’t work out with Hangout.

After months of silence Princess Georgy appeared at the Kreyol La/T-vice looking great and has slim down quite a bit I had the chance to speak with the princess discussing her album.

Georgy is currently working on her long awaited solo album and has recorded 10 tracks so far. I asked her when will the album be released she stated “It’s coming soon” and that I don’t wanna say a date and then it doesn’t come out on that date.”
I asked why she waited so long to come out with an album? Her reply was ”I wants to do it the right way and not just put out a mediocre album. I want the album to be a big bang. But I will be back for sure just stay tuned.”

Yes, Opa, you’ve heard it right here. Even though T-vice released a new single in effort to keep their so called #1 Konpa band, they still couldn’t stop the Look from being the new number one band in the HMI right now.

Then again, should I point out that Nu Look is the number one band in Haiti and US ONLY? Nah, I won’t rain on their parade (for now ) because the Look has yet to claim, that title since it’s existence and that’s makes them hot. They have packed parties throughout the states and Haiti thanks to that album, Abo (I personally don’t get ) but the majority have spoken and they love it. Congratulation to the whole band and Alex (clearing throat for the wrong pronunciation) I mean Arly on that one.

Rapper and former Fugees producer John Forté was one of 14 people pardoned by President Bush on Monday, according to Reuters. He had been serving a sentence of 14 years in prison since 2001, after being found guilty of possession of 31 pounds of liquid cocaine with intent to distribute.

The presidential pardons, which were for offenses ranging from distribution of marijuana to unauthorized use of a pesticide, cannot be overruled and can help the recipients find jobs, live in public housing and vote. Bush has received more than 2,000 requests for pardons, which typically come fast and furious near the end of a president’s term.

Forté — who studied violin at the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire as a youth — co-wrote and produced two songs on the Fugees’ Grammy-winning 1996 smash, The Score. Two years later, he released his debut, Poly Sci, on which Fugees member Wyclef Jean has an executive-producer credit.

Forté was arrested in 2000 at Newark International Airport after accepting a briefcase containing $1.4 million worth of cocaine. He released his confessional second album, 2002’s I, John, while already serving his sentence at Pennsylvania’s Lorreto Federal Penitentiary.
